Botswana adopts ISDB-T–Bostwana isdb-t tv receiver supplier
Government has decided to adopt the Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting-Terrestrial (ISDB-T) as its Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) standard, as part of the digital migration process.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration, Mr Newman Kahiya announced this on Radio Botswana on behalf of Minister Mokgweetsi Masisi.
Mr Kahiya said adoption of the ISDB-T standard was a result of a thorough process of research and evaluation of available options. “This was done in order to determine the most appropriate DTT standard for the country so as to meet the country’s switchover target of 2015,” he said.
He explained that the process involved comparative testing between the two leading international standards, namely Digital Video Broadcasting-Television second generation (DVB-T2) as well as ISDB-T.
“I can now report that the tests revealed that the ISDB-T standard has significant advantages over DVB-T2. Of particular note is the ISDB-T system’s hierarchical mode of operation, which allows for the simultaneous transmission to fixed, mobile and portable receivers from a single transmitter,” Mr Kahiya said.
He also noted that its capacity allowed for the provision of direct transmission to Batswana through multiple handheld devices, including cell phones, as well as traditional receivers.
He added that such reception would come at no additional cost to the consumer because there would be no need to go through network providers adding that the country’s socio-economic development was also a determinant in government’s decision.
“In addition to its technical merits, එම ISDB-T standard was evaluated favourably in the context of its adaptability as a platform for socio-economic development, as well as entertainment. In this respect, it is anticipated that DTT will become an additional driver in our efforts to transform Botswana into an E-Society,” Mr Kahiya said.
He further revealed that the ISDB-T system was originally developed in Japan and had since been adopted by a growing number of countries around the world including most of South America.
He noted, “to take us forward we are putting in place administrative structures, to be led by a digital migration implementation office and task force to fast track project delivery.”
The PS reassured Batswana that most current television receivers could receive digital signals and in the coming months, government would actively engage the general viewing public on the steps being put in place to ensure a smooth switchover.
Mr Kahiya said expansion of television services through digital migration would inevitably open up new and exciting economic opportunities for Batswana, which he said should be eagerly embraced as part of overall efforts to build a more diversified economy through local innovation
