SBUS to RS232 Converter RS232 to SBUS | UAV Remote Control Data Interface Board

SBUS to RS232 Converter RS232 to SBUS

SBUS → RS232 / RS232 → SBUS Converter Board

For UAV, UGV, USV Telemetry & Long-Range Remote Control Systems

Overview

This SBUS to RS232 or RS232 to SBUS directional converter board is a customized professional solution designed for unmanned systems such as UAVs, UGVs, USVs, and robotic platforms.
It enables reliable conversion between non-standard SBUS remote control signals and standard serial communication protocols (RS232 or UART-compatible serial).

The module fully solves the long-standing problem of SBUS incompatibility with computers, MCUs, telemetry radios, and network devices, making SBUS data directly usable as a standard serial interface without requiring users to handle complex protocol parsing.

This product is widely used in:

• Long-range drone remote control

• Wireless telemetry extension

• Ground robot control

• Remote vehicle networking

• Industrial automation with RC input

Technology Highlights

Advanced Protocol Support (Upgraded Version)

• Fully supports SBUS2 protocol

• Backward compatible with SBUS

• Compatible with WBUS (SkyRC / Tiandi Fei)

• Compatible with IBUS (FlySky)

This means even the latest SBUS2 receivers can be decoded correctly, ensuring long-term compatibility.

Why SBUS Cannot Be Used Directly

SBUS is a digital control protocol originally developed by Futaba.
Although it looks similar to UART, it is not a standard serial protocol.

SBUS Characteristics:

• Baud rate: 100 kbps

• Data format: 1 start bit, 2 stop bits, even parity

• Inverted logic level

• Packed bit-level channel data (11 bits per channel)

Because of this:

• Most MCUs and computers cannot read SBUS directly

• Even if 100k baud is supported, error rates are extremely high

• No built-in checksum in standard SBUS

• Not suitable for long-distance wired or wireless transmission

---

What Our Module Does

Our converter module:

• Converts SBUS electrical levels → standard logic levels

• Converts non-standard SBUS frames → standard serial data

• Decodes SBUS into directly usable integer channel values

• Optionally re-encodes data back into SBUS format

After conversion, SBUS can be treated like a normal serial port, allowing developers to focus on application logic instead of protocol complexity.

Product Variants & Functional Options

1. 100k Transparent Transmission Version (Not Recommended)

• Outputs raw SBUS format (100k baud, 2 stop bits, even parity)

• Limited compatibility

• High risk of packet loss

• Recommended only for special testing purposes

---

2. Adjustable Baud Rate Version (Highly Recommended)

• Converts SBUS to standard serial baud rates:

  • 9600

  • 38400

  • 57600

  • 115200

• Standard format:

  • 1 start bit

  • 1 stop bit

  • No parity

• Much lower error rate

• Compatible with most MCUs, radios, and computers

---

3. Adjustable Baud Rate + Adjustable Frame Rate

SBUS frames:

• 25 bytes per frame

• Default frame interval: 7–15 ms

Many telemetry radios, wired links, and wireless networks cannot handle such high frame rates, causing:

• Buffer overflow

• Packet loss

• System freeze

Our module allows frame interval adjustment:

• Adjustable from 20 ms to 500 ms

• 14 selectable levels

• Optimized for:

  • Long-range telemetry radios

  • 4G / LTE / IP networks

  • Wireless bridges

---

4. Adjustable Baud Rate + Integrated SBUS Encode / Decode

Without Encoding:

• Users must manually pack 16 channels into SBUS

• Requires:

  • Bit shifting

  • Frame timing control

  • Packet loss detection

  • Complex validation

• High CPU usage

• Risk of:

  • Control jitter

  • Signal instability

  • UAV loss of control

With Integrated Encode / Decode (Recommended):

• Module handles:

  • SBUS decoding

  • Channel extraction

  • SBUS re-encoding

• Adds checksum mechanism (XOR)

• Ensures data integrity over:

  • Wireless links

  • Long-distance cables

  • Network transmission

• Greatly improves system safety

This is the most complete solution, combining:

• Protocol conversion

• Frame rate control

• Data integrity protection

• Minimal development effort

Ideal for:

• Professional UAV systems

• Industrial unmanned platforms

• Commercial long-range applications

---

Output Data Format (Decoded Version)

Standard SBUS (25 bytes)

• No checksum

• Bit-packed data

• Not human-readable

Our Decoded Output (35 bytes)

• Frame header

• 16 channels × 2 bytes (integer format)

• Flags byte

• XOR checksum

Each channel value:

• Range: 0–2047

• High byte first, low byte second

• Directly usable by MCU or PC software
